Today we had a terrible experience here. We have been bringing our dog to Dr. Fortney for about 6 or so years. We switched vets because our dog was suffering from a skin condition that kept being misdiagnosed and was ongoing. Dr. Fortney was able to figure out the cause and solution. He was always great with our dog. We brought him here for all his exams, allergies, and an issue with his leg. Two years ago, we brought him in because he was urinating really frequently and after some blood tests, the vet suspected cancer. Sure enough, after additional tests at a specialist vet we learned the sad news that our dog had a large mass on his spleen and another in his chest cavity. The specialist gave our boy two months to live. We started cooking him Crock-Pot meals of chicken, rice, and potatoes. He lived for two more years with no other problems other than some stiff joints from arthritis and weight loss from the cancer. Last summer, we brought him in for his shots and expressed concern about our dog's weight. Dr Fortney told us not to worry as long as he was still eating and had energy, that the cancer would make him skinny. Our dog has been doing really well. about a week ago our dog started to get puffiness in his paws and face. Then today his face and neck became extremely swollen and he had labored breathing. We had already made an appointment for the morning but my husband called and asked if we could come right away. He arrived before me and explained the swelling to the vet. When we walked in, the vet weighed our dog, looked at him and said, "well you've let this go way too long" in a very accusatory and condescending way. We were shocked. We tried to remind him of our dog's history but it became clear that he had no idea who we were and no recollection of our dog whatsoever. He actually said to us, "I don't know what you want me to do." I asked him if he could tell us if the swelling was an effect of his cancer or if it could be caused by something else and he said "I'm not smart enough to figure that out." We then felt the need to recap our dog's entire history to him ( obviously he didn't look at our dog's chart). Then he started saying "yeah, he has a terminal illness. Some people let that go longer than others. It's a personal choice, etc." I finally had to ask him if we should seek treatment or put our dog down, then he said he recommended euthanasia but didn't have any so we should go somewhere else. He was in no way sympathetic, compassionate, helpful, informative, or kind. My husband and I left feeling more stressed and concerned than when we arrived. We went to Blue Pearl, the specialist clinic who had originally diagnosed our dog. They were so nice to us. They listened to us, took our dog's vitals, confirmed that his lymph nodes were swollen and that his tumor on his spleen had grown by feeling his neck and belly. They did not use any special tools or run any tests. They explained to us why the swelling was occuring and that it was a late stage of his cancer. They were kind and compassionate when they suggested euthanasia. They didn't make us feel like terrible people for having a sick dog and they even looked at our dog's 2.5 year old chart that they had on file. I am so disappointed in Dr. Fortney. I've had my dog for 14 years. He was a part of our family. He died today after a long and happy life, and this day has been tainted by the way we were treated by Dr. Fortney. My dog deserved much better.
